Because if you can’t beat ‚em, join ‚em.
There’s a 13 year cicada brood emerging right now in Tennessee. They make this loud, high pass filtered, undulating, pulsing, chaotic but somehow organized sound. 8 Bit Cicadas is a free library that tips it’s hat to the singers just outside the window.
I hand tuned the oscillators of two 8-bit synth voices into the same mono output and had them fight for space, creating interesting flutters, pulses and swells. Then each round robin goes through a different set of pan and volume LFO’s. The mod wheel engages a subtle low pass ladder filter. The room verb is an impulse response of the cicada’s in a room with the windows open.
