PG8X



PG8X now comes with an all-new and awesome looking GUI (pictured below) made by KVR Audio member ENV1 and the plugin is now compatible with all major platforms. The new beta worked without any issues on my test machine (64-bit version of MuLab Free running on Windows 7), however ML-VST is still working on making this plugin an even better instrument. The final version will include some additional minor fixes and improvements (a slightly different ADSR envelope and some minor GUI changes), as well as a detailed user manual. Compared to the old SynthEdit version of the plugin, the new hand-coded PG8X comes with improved compatibility, optimized CPU usage and, of course, a completely reworked sound engine which in my opinion sounds better than ever before.

This awesome instrument is now officially in my Top 3 freeware virtual analogue synthesizers of all time, along with Charlatan by BlauKraut Engineering and Tyrell N6 by U-He. It blows me away when a virtual instrument has a certain character and sound which is different from all the other ones out there and PG8X is definitely that kind of instrument. You can make some amazing analogue style sounds with it, including (but not limited to) string ensembles (the chorus module included in PG8X sounds just brilliant), wonderful lush pads, huge bass sounds and lots of other stuff.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to the developer ML-VST for his work on this amazing freeware instrument. I remember when Martin first announced that he is going to develop a fully hand-coded version of PG8X all those years ago and it sounded like something that is simply too good to become true one day. But here it is and Martin Lüders (with the help of ENV1 who made an amazing GUI, as well as the support from the KVR Audio community who made some great suggestions on how to further improve PG8X) actually made this wonderful instrument a reality.

Ich müsste mich mal hinsetzen und einen Vergleich zur Hardware ziehen. Den JX8P habe ich zwar nicht mehr, aber aus der Erinnerung sind die Klänge nach Einladen der Factory Sysex sehr nah am Orginal. Toll ist die Randomfunktion, die schnell einen neuen Ansatzpunkt gibt um dann am Klang zu arbeiten und die Möglichkeit der Abspeicherung als Sysex. Der MKS70 (ist ja ein Rack-JX10, der quasi ein doppelter JX8P ist) könnte ggf. mit diesem Plugin befüttert werden, wenn man das immer noch das etwas bessere Klangbild der Hardware bevorzugt, insbesondere wenn es um den Lowend geht. Für den Rest der Welt ist dieses Plugin aber ein ganz toller virtueller Ersatz...

Er klingt "definitiv" wie der Hardware JX8P.....ich hatte von meinem alten JX noch Original-aufnahmen auf Tape und habe sämtliche von meinen Sounds nachprogrammiert und zum
Vergleich entsprechend nachgespielt. Es gibt so gut wie keine Differenzen im Sound......

Für die "alte" Synth-Edit Version hatte ich seinerzeit einen kleinen Teil meiner mit der Hardware erstellten Patches in Form von 5 Soundbänken zur Verfügung gestellt, die noch auf Martins´ Facebook Seite zur Verfügung stehen....(Portierung auf neue Version ist geplant)...
Martin hat das Plugin nunmehr komplett neu programmiert und ist mit neuer GUI und ebenso Originalsound neu am Start - eine perfekte Emulation....!

This is truly one of the best free VSTi's that was ever made. Luders did a really great job on this.
And... that's sad that Roland JX-3P don't have much love as much as JX-8P. Hope some day there will be outstanding VST of this (not tried Stumm PG-23P, so can't say anything about it).

Ich habe gerade mal 4 Sounds miteinander vergleichen. Der erste Sound ist immer vom Roland MKS70, der zweite Sound vom PG8X wobei ich bemerken möchte, dass dieses kein Test unter optimalen Bedingungen ist. Mir ging es nur darum zu schauen, wie weit der Klangcharakter voneinander entfernt ist. Unterschiede sind da, aber im musikalischen Zusammenhang gering und die Programmierung eines JX8P/JX10P oder MKS70 erfolgt in der Regel per Software oder über einen zusätzlichen Controller. Ohne Controller liegen die Preise irgendwo zwischen 700-800 Euro, mit Controller reißt es die 1000 Euro Marke. In den USA gehen die [MKS70] zwar für 650 - 800 $ ohne Controller weg, nur da kommt noch der internationale Versand und Zoll dazu... also billig ist das nicht.

Zu den Konditionen würde ich mir heutzutage ehrlich gesagt keinen mehr anschaffen....

Yes, that's correct. I think it's pretty close. You can hear a difference, but it's not world-shaking.
I wouldn't buy a Roland MKS70 again for current prices.

Ich finde diese Emulation auch fantastisch, habe aber maximale Probleme, SYSEX-Settings zu einer Bank zu kombinmieren. Wenn ich zusätzliche SYSEX lade, verschwinden immer welche auf anderen Slots, ohne dass ich ein System erkennen könnte. Stehe z.B. auf Slot 2 und lade ein SYSEX, ist Slot 1 meist wieder auf INIT. Auch passiert es, dass das neu geladene SYSEX dann nicht auf Slot 2 steht, sondern auf 15 (oder 30).  :o
