Zwei Soundbänke (64 Sounds) für den Yamaha DX7, Dexed, NI FM7 & FM8, Hexter oder andere DX7-sysex lesende Formate.

Einige erklärende/einführende Worte (5 Minuten Zeit):

Wer weiß noch, was er im November 1991 gemacht hat?
Nun, für mich war es an jenen Tagen der Einstieg in die Soundprogrammierung - mehr spontan.
Nach meiner CEI Prestige Orgel und dem Crumar Multiman S, war der Yamaha DX7 mein erster
richtige Synthesizer. Nach Beendigung meines Spiels in einer Band, fröhnten diese nunmehr ein stilles Dasein.

Bisher hatte ich nur an der "Brass-Section" des Crumar die Regler etc. verändert, am DX sonst die "Factories" benutzt.
Nachdem ich mich eines Tages (im Nov) beim DX7 - nur um spontan und erstmalig einen Sound leicht zu verändern - im Sound-edit-Modus befand, änderte sich mehr durch Zufall dieses Patch zu etwas ganz Neuem, außergewöhnlichen Sound.
Durch Neugier/Wissensdrang geweckt und anhand der Bedienungsanleitung sowie "Learning-by-doing", erforschte ich nach und nach die FM-Synthese des DX7 (obwohl es ja garnicht "reine" FM Synthese ist).

Im Laufe der nächsten drei Jahre entstanden so (fast immer ausgehend vom "Sound-init" Patch),
an die 1.500 Sounds. Es war eine Sucht, diese neuen Klangwelten - auch weitab der Factorypatches -
zu entdecken. Seit den 80ern waren diese bekannten Sounds ja "ausgelutscht". Ich war aber mehr
an obskuren oder "anderen" Sounds interessiert - diese fand und programmierte ich. Kein Sound
dieser Sammlung klang/klingt gleich und ich träumte tlw. nachts schon von "Key-Level-Scaling" oder "Breakpoint".
Die FM-Synthese wurde so zu einem offenen Buch für mich und ich wußte bald sehr genau, welchen
Algorithmus ich für welche Art von Sounds verwenden konnte.
Es war mein Einstieg in die Soundprogrammierung, die mich bis  heute - mehr für VSTi´s - fasziniert.

Danach folgten weitere Hardware-Synths in meinem Setup, für die ich unzählige Sounds programmierte,
wie der Roland JX8P (s. einige meiner Bänke auf Martin Lüders PG8X-Facebook Seite), der Yamaha AN1x
oder auch der große Yamaha SY (FM mit AWM), Korg Prophecy.
Doch der Yamaha DX7 war mein Einstieg und somit etwas Besonderes.

Bevor ich den DX7 verkaufte, wollte/musste ich die Sounds als Sysex speichern (wer wußte, was kommt).
Da nur eine User-Bank für 32 Sounds im DX war und mangels PC (1991-93!!), hatte ich immer jeden Sound per Hand auf "Datenblättern" (aus der Bed-anleitung kopiert), bzw. Kollegblöcken notiert.
Wer weiß, wieviele Parameter der DX7 hatte, weiß, wieviel Arbeit und Zeit das jeweils war.
Ja, damals war Speicher noch ein Wort, mit Respekt zu behandeln - gab kein Cubase etc. und "spielen" musste
man auch können.

Nun, 1999 also und mit PC, stand mir das gleiche umgekehrt bevor - alle Werte von den Blättern ablesen
und von Hand wieder in den DX eingeben (der DataEntry-Regler als einziger Zugang zum Werte verändern!)
- Sound für Sound. Das dauerte ca. 3 Wo (jeden Tag nach der Arbeit und die WE von morgens bis abends).
Die besten Klänge sind bis heute in 36 sysex Dateien archiviert und hüte ich wie einen Schatz.

Diese sind jedoch absolut andere Klänge, als die große erhältliche Auswahl im Netz.
Schade, denn dortige sind meist doppelt und dreifach, bzw. lediglich meist ein Abklatsch der Factory-Klänge.
Nur wenige Sounddesigner hatten wohl speziellere Klänge im Angebot, jedoch sind diese ebenso verschwunden,
wie deren Bänke. Eine Handvoll gute & freie Bänke sind erhältlich, aber es ist echt Mühe, diese zu finden.

Leider gab es wohl nur wenige, die seinerzeit den Zugang zur FM-Synthese fanden, bzw. die mühsame
Programmierung des DX7 in Kauf oder sich die Zeit nahmen, sich überhaupt damit zu beschäftigen.
Wieviele DX kamen wohl zur Reparatur und es befanden sich immer noch die Originalen Sounds im Speicher.

Wenn ich den "Dexed"-Thread bei KVR durchforsche, muss ich doch feststellen, daß kaum jemand wohl
je einen DX7 unter den Fingern hatte, bzw. sich weitgehend mit dessen Programmierung/Synthese beschäftigt hat - schade.
Es ist etwas komplett anderes, als FM, implementiert in OSC-Sectionen heutiger Synths etc.
Mit Begriffen wie "Breakpoint", "Key-Level-Scaling" oder überhaupt den Einfluss der Operatoren untereinander
im Algorithmus, bzw. der Feedback-Operatoren, kann leider kaum jemand etwas anfangen.

Im übrigen musste ich auch feststellen, daß entgegen vieler Meinungen, der freie "DEXED" leider die DX7 Klänge
nicht 100% reproduzieren kann. Vll. trifft dies auf die geläufigen Factorysounds zu, doch viele "meiner" Klänge
bleiben der Authentizität versagt. Absolut original klingen sie dagegen im NI FM7, den ich mir seinerzeit - neben dem SY, als Software gekauft hatte.

Genug der Worte:
Zum Jubiläum meines Einstiegs in die Sounderforschung/Klangerstellung, habe ich zwei der Sysex-Dateien/Sounds, exclusiv für Music-Society-Mitglieder, bereitgestellt.
Dieses ist natürlich nur eine kleine, sporadische Auswahl meiner Soundkollektion.
Diese hüte ich weiterhin wie Diamanten und nehme sie wohl irgendwann mit ins Grab,
bzw. mein Sohn spielt damit in meinem/seinem Sinne weiter.

Der DX7 kann weitaus mehr als die in den 80ern legendär gewordenen E-Pianos, Bells, Plucks, Percussions,
Brass, Bässe oder Orgel- und FX-sounds.
Wenn man sich intensiv mit der Syntheseform auseinandersetzt und tiefer vordringt, offenbaren sich ganz neue
Klangwelten. Meine beiden Bänke schneiden das jedoch nur an, trotzdem kann man sich anhand dessen vll. vorstellen, was für Sounds sich zaubern lassen und wie sich die anderen über 1000 Sounds anhören.
Allerdings möchte ich auch nicht mehr Sounds weitergeben - zuviel Arbeit und Mühe stecken darin.

Viel Spaß mit den Sounds.
Im Sounddemo habe ich am Beispiel des Patches "Atmosphere 5" dargelegt, inwieweit der Sound des "Dexed"
vom originalen DX7 abweicht.
Nach dem Piano-Beispiel "Die Tänzerin/Edo Zanki", kommt das AtmoPatch vom Dexed und am Ende des Demos, eingespielt vom FM7 (wie er eigentlich auch im DX7 klingt)....!



Some important words (5 minutes of your precious time):

Does everbody knows, what he have done in november, 1991?
For me, it was the date of my entry in soundprogramming - in a more spontaneous action.

After my CEI Prestige Organ and a Crumar Multiman S (Orchestrator), the Yamaha DX7 was my first "right"
synthesizer. I left a musical-band some months ago and these instruments had a quiet life in my rooms
for the next time.
I never touch programming before, only some sliders in the "brass-section" of my Crumar.
One day, I´ve tried to change a sound in my DX for the first time.
I´ve stayed in the "sound-edit" of the synth and fiddled around with some parameteres, without the knowledge,
what I was really doing there.
But the result was exceptional. I was very curious then and with the use of the synth-manual and "learning-by-doing",
I explored the FM-synthesis of the DX7 day by day (although it´s not the real FM-Synthesis in the DX-series).

In the next three years, I´ve patched more than 1.500 sounds (most started with the "sound-init" patch)
So, it was a real DX-mania, like a drug, to explore these new soundworlds - far beyond of that known factorypatches.
Cos of the 80s, these all-known sounds were really "worn" these days and I was interested in more obscured
and "other" sounds. In my programming - I´ve found them. No sound of my personal collection is equal,
cos I´ve made them for me - in the first line. And so I had dreamt many nights of "Key-level-scaling" or "Breakpoints".
The FM-synthesis was going to be an open book for me and after some months I had the knowledge,
which Algorithms I have to choose for a special kind of sound.
This was my entry in soundprogramming, which is fascinating me until nowadays - today more for VSTi´s.

Little by little some more synths have found the way in my little studio. And I´ve made many patches for
them too. There was a Roland JX8P (some banks can be found at Martin Lüders FB-page (his PG8X),
the Yamaha AN1x, the big Yamaha SY (FM with AWM) or a Korg Prophecy.
But the Yamaha DX7 was the beginning and therefore something special.

Before I´ve sold the DX with a broken heart, I had to save all the sounds in sysex. But I´ve made them in 1991-1993
and without the lack of a PC. In the User-bank of the DX7 only 32 patches could be saved. So I have written
them down per hand in those data-sheets (copied from the manual) or in/on colleq-blocks. All of the ~1500 sounds.
Who knows, how many parameters are part of a sound of the DX7, knows how much work this must have been.
Yeah, memory was a respectful word at those times - there was no Cubase at all - and everybody must have the
ability to "play" with his hands - not with the mouse.

Though, in 1999 - now with PC, I had to do the same - but vice-versa. All those parameters read from the sheets
and step-by-step type into the DX7 (the Data-Entry-slider was the only way for change the parameters) - sound by sound.
This procedure takes about 3 weeks (every day after work til late evening and the whole weekends, after breakfast
til midnight).
So, the best sounds are saved until today in 36 sysex-folders and I keep them like a treasure.

These sounds in my big collection are very unique - unlike the patches you may find on the net. There are
thousands of sounds, but sadly, most of them are doubles or cheap copies of the factorysounds. Some are only changed
a little. Only a few sounddesigners offered some truly special sounds, but they are vanished in the haze - like their
banks. So there are only a few "free" banks available, with really good sounds, they may are unique. But these
are hard to find.

Sadly, there are only a few musicians/designers, who found the access to FM-synthesis, especially found the
time - the big time - to program a DX7 or has got the knowledge.
How many DX7 must have been repaired and the technician have wondered, that the user-memory is full with
the originalsounds. No musician has changed anything - what a mess for this wonderful exciting synthesizer.

When I read the "Dexed"-thread on KVR, i must sadly see, that almost no one has ever used a original DX7 or
layed his hands on and more, almost no one has ever programmed a DX7 or knows him in and out.
It´s something completely different as the FM in some OSC-sections of actual synths.
Words like "Breakpoint", "key-level-scaling" or the influence of the FM-operators to each other in the algorithms,
especially of the feedback operators - it seems, no one can has exactly all answers to it - very sad.

And I have recognised, that against all opinions of everybody else, the free "DEXED", can´t reproduce the sounds
of the DX7 perfectly. Eventually this could be with the factory sounds. But many of "my" patches sounds not the same.
But the NI FM7, which I´ve bought as the successor of the DX7 in software, can reproduce all these sounds
perfectly 1:1!!

Enough of the words:
To the 25th anniversary of my personal soundprogramming, here are two of my sysex-folders/banks - exclusively
for members of music-society. Of course, these are only a little, sporadic selection of my big collection.
But this collection is like some precious diamonds and well-saved, I will take them surely within into my grave,
or rather my son is playing them/or choose them for his own needs.

The DX7 can produce far more as the known 80s legend E-pianos, Bells, Plucks, Percussions, Bass,
Brass, Organs or SFX sounds.
If you going deeper into the FM-synthesis, there are obvious new worlds of sound.
For example, everchanging Textures, Atmos, Vocalchoirs, Otherworldly sounds, Exciting Pads & Leads,
Lively Keys and Percussions, realistic Reeds, SFX´s and FX-Drums.
So this synth will be never-outdated.
My posted banks are only a little example of how my collection sounds.
But I wont share more patches of these collection - there was too much work and time bounded.

So, have much fun with these sounds. In the sounddemo I have shown - with the example of the sound "Atmosphere 5",
the difference between "Dexed" and the original "DX7/FM7".
After the first part of the demo, "Die Tänzerin/Edo Zanki" Pianosound-example, you can hear that atmo-sound.
I´ve played the same sound with the "FM7", which comes much closer, at the end of the sounddemo.
But, hear for yourself.



Das Sounddemo wurde wieder mit den originalen Sounds der Bänke (mit Ausnahme der Drums) und ohne Zunahme von externen Effekten, eingespielt - pur DX7 und trocken.

The Sounddemo was played only with patches from this banks (except the drums) and without the use of external effects - pure and "dry" DX7.
